Children and Youth Program

Guardian Self-defense Childrens ProgramsThe goal of our children’s and youth programs is to provide a safe, positive and non-competitive environment for the practice and study of karate. As a martial art, karate fosters a healthy outlook, develops respect for self and others, and cultivates flexibility and coordination. The principles of moral conduct and manners are also stressed.

We work with parents and welcome their input. Challenge and fun are essential elements to our children's and youth programs. Our classes are structured in age breaks to provide the best learning opportunity. There is some age overlap and children will be placed in the class that is best suited to their needs. Our Youth classes are taught by highly experienced and caring instructors. Interested parents are welcome to come and watch class and speak with the other parents about our program.

Our classes are highly energetic and at the same we stress focusing, respect and cooperation and building awareness of center. We play games and the kids start to learn karate’s techniques and names. Class starts with a seated bow and end with sweating smiling faces. You are welcome to come and watch any class and speak with other parents about our program. Your Child will Achieve More Than Just Learning to Kick and Punch

It’s true that Knee-High Samurai activities will keep your child physically fit and that many of the group activities show children the benefits of good behavior. But, best of all, your child’s class curriculum will also help them see the value of teamwork, good manners and trying their best outside of the classroom.

Here are the main life skills that are taught in the

Knee-High Samurai program

Focus, Self-Control, Fitness, Balance,

Coordination, Memory, Teamwork, Discipline

Knee-High Samurai Reinforces Your Family Values

Many of the same concepts you are teaching your child at home will be consistently reinforced through classroom discussions in your child’s program. Topics such as: good manners (which include keeping hands and feet to themselves), respect for one’s self and others, following directions the first time and more are taught!

Here’s How Your Child Will Learn to Set Goals, Build Confidence

and Have a Positive Attitude

At the end of each month, the students who can demonstrate the skills covered will be given a skill stripe. The skill stripes are an achievement reward and work as an incentive for your child. Once your child has earned all 8 of the life skill stripes, they will move up to the next level. This helps your child see the benefit in trying their best.

Knee-High Samurai Helps Prepare Your Child for Life

Knee-High Samurai will improve your child’s basic motor skills, as well as your child’s positive mental skills. These skills will help your child enter society with a confident and enthusiastic outlook. Your child will become a better listener at home and feel more ambitious towards his/her future goals.

We believe the time between ages three and six are the most important years of a child’s development. Juniors Samurai Program - 9 - 12 years of age

!

This is an introductory class emphasizing the fundamental movement skills in karate. Basic self-defense technique, stance, posture, and presence and creative solutions to conflict (Centering) are highlighted. We also play with games that embody karate principles. In addition, students learn the basic techniques of karate and their Japanese names. Colored belts are awarded with testing at the discretion of the instructor for progress made in training. The testing process is designed to enhance confidence and self-esteem and goal setting. Each child is given personal attention in this process.

A 1985 study found that children in martial arts have an increased sense of responsibility, a decrease in the willingness to take foolish risks, and a higher sense of self-esteem. This is why millions of parents are using martial arts to supplement their children’s education.

Our reward system improves children’s self-esteem

The belt system is the key to building esteem. When kids earn their belts it gives them a great sense of accomplishment that really improves the way they feel about themselves.

Our program teaches children discipline

We have a trained staff of patient instructors who love to work with children, but are also very clear about limits. We enforce good rules of behavior in class, and we expect the same good behavior at home and in school.

Our activities channel children’s aggression

Many doctors have prescribed our school because of the positive outlet it gives the kids for all their energy.

Our program teaches children essential self defense skills

Our program teaches practical, proven self-defense methods. We also teach the kids that the moves they learn in class will work, so they don’t go home and try them on their family members or neighbors.

Martial Arts are Great for Children

Parents today are recognizing that the public school system is not enough. Millions of parents are bringing martial arts, as we teach here, into their children’s lives to supplement their education.

Carleton University, in a study reported in Psychology Today (January 1985), found that children in martial arts have a lower level of anxiety; an increased sense of responsibility; a decrease in the willingness to take foolish risks; a higher sense of self-esteem; higher level of social intelligence; and were less likely to be radical.

Parents report these five important benefits for

their children from our martial arts classes:

1. Our reward system improves children's self-esteem

Martial arts are not like team sports because the emphasis is on developing the individual's self-esteem not the teams winning record. The belt system is the key. When kids earn their belts it gives them a great sense of accomplishment that really improves the way they feel about themselves.

2. Our program teaches children discipline

On of the things parents appreciate most about our classes is the improvement in their child’s self-discipline. We have a wonderful staff of patient instructors who love to work with children, but are also very clear about limits. We enforce good rules of behavior in class, and we expect the same good behavior at home and in school.

3. Our activities channel children's aggression

Many doctors actually prescribed our school for treatment because of the positive outlet it gives the kids for all their energy.

4. Our confidence classes enhance children's self-esteem

We believe confidence is one of the most important things we can give kids. That’s why every class we teach has confidence-building drills included.

5. Our program teaches children essential self-defense skills

Our program teaches practical, proven self-defense methods. We also teach the kids that the moves they learn in class will work, so they don’t go home and try them on their sister, or neighbor.
